Hillary Should Denounce Racism in Presidential Choice
I've been delighted to notice in the past several days that the tone of this Democratic primary has shifted to one of party unity. Hillary has begun talking more generally about the Democrats prevailing in November no matter who the nominee, and tonight Obama spoke about how his own daughters' lives would benefit from the tremendous legacy of the 2008 Hillary Clinton campaign.
Contrasting these themes, however, is a very worrisome strain of Democratic racism, displayed most shockingly in the West Virginia and Kentucky exit polls. Large percentages of Hillary supporters are claiming that race played a major role in their presidential vote, and even before this, the Reverand Wright issue pointed to what many see as the "objectionable" nature of the unencumbered black voice.
David Gergen, a CNN pundit, had a great idea though tonight. He said, "Wouldn't it be great if Hillary Clinton said to her supporters loud and clear, 'If you are choosing not to vote for Barack Obama because he is black, then I do not want your vote.'"
I thought to myself...wow, what a terrific thought. Despite Bill's unfortunate comments in South Carolina, the Clintons do have a strong legacy on race issues, and I don't think such a statement would appear insincere. I think it could do a lot actually, for her and for him and for all of us. What do you think?
