Post-Nostalgia Nostalgia and You

I willingly admit that I’ve learned as much from all volumes of VH1’s “I Love the 70s,” 80s and 90s as from watching "Behind the Music" over the years. My friend and I frequently recall and quote Michael Ian Black’s droll commentary on historical classics like…Malibu Barbie, shag carpeting, pet rocks or Lonie Anderson and Burt Reynolds. However, VH1’s latest incarnation of the “I Love the…” series is about the decade WE ARE CURRENTLY IN. Of course has its laugh-out-loud funny moments, but nostalgia for last year is too much for me to handle.

I was peeved when “I Love the 90s” and “I Love the 90s: Part Deux” came out. No, it’s too soon! I need more distance from "Jurassic Park." But now “I Love the New Millennium?” What possible perspective can we have on the “Transformers” movie? Also, I don’t think one can watch the “Bushisms” of each year without getting a little sad that he’s still our president. Hey, remember when Rachael Ray first came on the scene? Yes! Who doesn't?

It was funny when my friend fell off her chair in our middle school home ec. class and when I said “Hey, remember when you fell off your chair?” after she got back up. We all had a good laugh. But waxing nostalgic about things that just happened just doesn’t have the kind of charm and wit of true comic nostalgia.

The fact that it’s an incomplete series may bother me more than anything. When will they cover 2008 and 2009? I just don’t understand where the urgency for “I Love the New Millennium” came from.

I still have to say, my protest does not detract from my willingness to watch every and all episodes.

I personally can't wait for VH1 to air the "I Love the 'I Love The...' Series" series, an overdue retrospective on retrospectives that might have helped them arrive at the very conclusion you've put forth.

"I Love the 'I Love the...'" whatever would be mindblowing! I think the earth would actually explode.
