Rachel Ray is an Islamic Extremist or: How America has lost its marbles and hates Arabs

I agree with everything in this post, but I would be hesitant to conclude that "America lost its marbles and hates Arabs." At least I hope that is not the case, even though that is what is insinuat... Continue

Trade, Economic Development, ISI, Chicago-School Deregulation, & The Asian Tiger Economies (and Chile).

In light of this talk about free trade and what model works best for developing economies, I was wondering about people's thoughts on the merits of Import-Substitution-Industrialization in the earl... Continue

"Human Dignity & Life" and the Values Debate

First, a few questions to ask yourself. You really only need to read the first one to get the gist of the post, so you can read the first question and then skip to my commentary if you like. (1) What do you think of when you read the words "Human Dignity & Life"? (2) Does your answer to the above question call to mind some notion of "universal values," (such as moral values)? (3) If yes to the above question, are these values closely identified with your politics? (4) If yes to th… Continue

Inequality in America

Recently there has been some discussion about the level of inequality in the US and about how workers are economically worse off than they have been in past decades, and the different reasons contributing to this, both economic and political. This post will be my effort at consolidating some of the best of that material that I am aware of, into one place, in the interest of furthering the discussion. Last Friday's episode of Bill Moyers Journal on PBS was one of the best examples I am aware of… Continue

McClellan, Free Speech, and our National Discourse

This Op-Ed is inspired by my reading of a previous Op-Ed, "Many Asking What Happened" by Adam Jerome, so I will start with my thanks for giving me the idea for writing this. Adam's Op-Ed discussed the different reactions from the right and from the left to the release Scott McClellan's book. To get the full effect, one should read Adam's article. It provided a good distillation of how the two sides see McClellan… Continue

Ralph Nader calls for Resignation and/or Impeachment of Bush & Cheney

Although we haven't heard much about him lately, Ralph Nader displayed today that he intends to play a prominent role in the general election campaign. In this video Nader not only gives an extensive critique of the Bush administration and its effects on our country, but also criticizes the Democratic party as well, calling both Obama and Clinton, as well as McCain, "the corporate candidates." He also makes a rather inspiring case for people to become more engaged and interested in politics. N… Continue

Character Assassination and the Death of Free Speech

Hillary's latest remarks are the most recent in a parade of soundbites that have been used, by the media, for lack of anything else to use, as a way to define the candidates. By define the candidates I mean provide, to the public, information about the candidates, which the public can use in order to decide who to vote for. Yes, I am hinting towards the familiar criticism of the media (which might be the only thing more annoying than the media itself because of its futility and lack of solution… Continue
